Health services and the consequences of carbon pricing on the cost of living across Canada will be among the topics addressed by almost all Canadian provincial premiers and territorial leaders at their meeting this week on November 6 in Halifax.
Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston said that health services were at the top of the official agenda at the last Council of the Federation meeting, and he hopes that the discussions will result in innovative ideas that can help provinces address the issues and problems affecting their health systems.
Cost of living and carbon price:
Houston said the discussions might also include carbon pricing and the Alberta Conservative government's plan to withdraw from the Canadian pension plan.
The focus on fuel costs also comes after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced last month a three-year temporary halt to carbon pricing on fuel used for home heating in the ten provinces and territories that apply federal fuel taxes.
British Columbia Premier David Eby said that the temporary pause on carbon pricing is unfair for provinces like his, which impose their own fuel tax and are not eligible for this tax relief.
Meanwhile, Ontario Premier Doug Ford called for a complete end to carbon pricing across Canada.
Quebec Premier François Legault, facing a series of strikes, will not attend the meeting due to a scheduling conflict.
