The Dutch police arrested a group of supporters of the Palestinian cause in central Amsterdam on Sunday after they organized a demonstration despite a court order banning protests.
The arrests took place after demonstrators chanted slogans and raised banners in Dam Square, following clashes between Israeli football fans and youths in the city.
The ban, supported by the Amsterdam District Court, was issued in response to a request from the mayor, following clashes during a match between Ajax Amsterdam and Maccabi Tel Aviv.
However, hundreds gathered in the square on Sunday carrying banners demanding the restoration of the streets and chanting "Free Palestine." Hours after the court upheld the protest ban, riot police intervened to disperse the demonstrators.
Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema described the violence witnessed in the city as antisemitic. The court announced via the "X" platform that the mayor was correct in enforcing the ban over the weekend, which led to the rejection of the protest request.
Meanwhile, Dutch activist Frank van der Linde submitted an urgent request for a permit to organize the demonstration despite the temporary ban imposed by the municipality since Friday, which included enhanced security measures and wearing face masks, set to last until Monday morning.
Dozens of peaceful protesters gathered on Sunday afternoon despite the heavy police presence, holding banners, including one calling for combating antisemitism and Zionism, which was described as "an act of genocide."
Clashes erupted between fans of the two teams on Thursday evening in Amsterdam after the match, while "AT5" aired footage showing police escorting Israeli fans, and recordings showed some chanting hostile slogans in Hebrew such as "Eliminate the Arabs! We will win."
In a related context, about 100 fans of the Israeli club gathered on Thursday afternoon in Dam Square before heading to the Johan Cruyff Stadium amid tight security measures. A pro-Palestinian demonstration was planned near the stadium to protest against the hosting of the Israeli club, but the municipality of Amsterdam relocated it to another site for security reasons.
These events come after fans of the French club Paris Saint-Germain displayed a large banner reading "Free Palestine" during their match with Spanish club Atletico Madrid, which drew criticism from French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau, who emphasized that such actions are prohibited in football. Retailleau also refused to relocate the match between France and Israel in the UEFA Nations League scheduled for November 14 at the "Stade de France" in Paris.
