On Saturday, November 9, 2024, Chrystia Freeland, the Deputy Prime Minister of Canada, announced that Canada fully controls its borders and will not allow the illegal flow of immigrants. This statement came in response to threats from elected President Donald Trump to deport millions of illegal immigrants, some of whom may end up trying to enter Canada.
Freeland said in remarks to CBC television: “Our borders are safe and will remain so no matter what happens in the world.”
She clarified that Canada will determine who can enter its territory, confirming that the country seeks to attract new immigrants but on the condition that they comply with the Canadian immigration system, meaning they can complete all required documentation and go through the selection process via the Canadian immigration system.
Additionally, Freeland confirmed that the Canadian government will remain committed to serving the country's interests and stability, and that immigration policies will be fully under the control of Canadian authorities.
On the other hand, Trump had made the issue of reducing illegal immigration a key part of his 2024 campaign. He repeatedly vowed to expand the deportation campaign of illegal immigrants if he won and outlined plans to return these immigrants to their home countries.
He also announced his intention to form a special task force of representatives from law enforcement agencies to combat criminal illegal immigrants.
It is worth noting that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced in October 2024 a reduction in the number of new immigrants allowed to enter Canada, acknowledging the challenges in managing immigration policies in his country.
He confirmed that immigration is essential for Canada's future, but emphasized the need for related policies to be manageable and sustainable.
