New Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singh stated that it is likely the confidence agreement between his party and the Liberal Party will be canceled as the proposed deadline for introducing the pharmacare program approaches, which was agreed upon among several other programs to keep the federal government and the current Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in power during 2025.
Jagmeet pointed out that this deal is expected to be canceled if the two sides do not reach an agreement on legislation
that lays the foundation for the pharmacare strategy by the end of this month.
Jagmeet also mentioned during a press conference held in the capital Ottawa that he is not currently announcing where things are heading.
The New Democratic Party had signed a political agreement with the ruling Liberal Party in 2022 to provide support
and reinforcement for the government in key votes, in exchange for progress on shared priorities, including dental healthcare and pharmacare.
The Liberals had agreed to introduce and pass pharmacare legislation by the end of last year 2023
while negotiations regarding the contents of the agreement stalled, and the parties decided to extend the deadline until early March in hopes of reaching an agreement.
Singh added that his party will not automatically provide support for passing government bills, and the Liberals will have to negotiate with them each time they request their support for the Liberal Party.
