The union representing MiWay workers in Mississauga has reached a tentative agreement with the transit agency to avoid a potential strike later this summer.
In a press release issued yesterday, Friday, ATU Local 1572 stated that it reached a tentative agreement after hours of an “enthusiastic training rally” outside Mississauga City Hall.
Local 1572 President Jack Jackson said in a statement, “Our members have worked hard for this contract, and we believe it strikes the right balance between meeting their needs and maintaining the high level of service that the residents of Mississauga deserve.”
Mississauga's Transit Director Eve Wiggins mentioned the tentative agreement in her statement on Friday morning, saying, “We look forward to ratifying it soon.”
The union stated that the agreement “addresses key issues” for workers, including wage increases, improved benefits, better working conditions, and enhanced health and safety.
John Costa, the International President of the Amalgamated Transit Union, added in a statement, “Our members' unwavering unity is the reason we have obtained a tentative agreement that they should be proud to vote on, and their dedication, not only in the fight for a better contract but also in the fight for a better public transit system for the city of Mississauga, inspires us all.”
The union noted that workers are expected to hold a meeting to ratify the deal soon, and the terms of the settlement will not be shared with the public until after they have been presented to the members, according to the statement.
MiWay employs more than 1,400 staff in total, according to the 2024 city budget, with ATU representing approximately 1,200 of them. They could have walked off the job in August if an agreement had not been reached.
