The freight railway network will come to a complete halt in Canada this week, according to forecasts after the two largest railway companies issued closure notices to the Teamsters union representing 10,000 workers, in the event that agreements regarding work fail to be reached.
This is the first simultaneous labor stoppage at the two companies, which could disrupt critical shipments such as grains, coal, and timber.
It could lead to economic losses in the billions of dollars and disrupt trade across North America.
