Those visiting the Toronto Islands this weekend may experience longer wait times when returning to the city as two of the five ferry boats will be out of service.

The city states that the ferry A.E. Thomas Rennie, which has a capacity of 915 passengers, and the heritage ferry The Trillium, which can carry 815 passengers and operates only under certain weather conditions, are undergoing repairs and are not expected to return to service for a few weeks.

The city mentions that the other three ferries, Ongiaria, Sam McBride, and William Inglis, are expected to operate at full capacity this weekend.

Sam McBride has a capacity of 915 passengers, while Ongiaria and William Inglis can carry 389 and 220 passengers, respectively.

On the city’s ferry website, a service alert has been posted to warn the public to "expect long wait times" for returning from the island.

The alert states: “For a less crowded experience, consider returning to the city before 4 PM, using the water taxi, or choosing another time to visit Toronto Island.”

The city clarified that it expects a busy weekend on the island with the weather and the annual Dragon Boat Festival taking place on Centre Island.

The ferry schedule has been adjusted to increase the frequency of trips to the busiest island dock after 6 PM. The city states that it is helping to return visitors to the mainland as quickly as possible.

The ferries operate from the Jack Layton Terminal and transport hundreds of passengers to and from Ward's Island, Centre Island, and Hanlan's Point.

The city advises anyone visiting the island to be patient, plan to travel during off-peak hours (for example, take the ferry before 10 AM and return to the mainland before 4 PM), and purchase tickets online.
