British pop singer Lily Allen said her children "complete her," but their presence "completely destroyed" her career.
When asked on the Times Radio program whether she had to reconsider her career strategy after having children, Allen replied: "I never have a strategy when it comes to work, but yes, my children destroyed my career."
Allen added jokingly during the interview released on Tuesday: "I mean, I love them and they complete me, but when it comes to pop stardom, they completely destroyed it."
The singer continued: "It really annoys me when people say you can have it all, because honestly, you can't." "Some people choose their career over their children, and that is their prerogative."
Allen witnessed most of her career successes in the UK, where she achieved three number-one hits and 15 in the top 40 chart. Her first album "Alright Still," which included the songs "Smile" and "LDN," brought her to fame and led to great success. It was nominated for Best Alternative Music Album at the 2008 Grammy Awards.
Allen (38 years old) said she chose to step back from her career and focus on raising her two daughters, whom she shares with her ex-husband Sam Cooper, because her parents were "completely absent" when she was a child.
Allen's parents, actor Keith Allen and film producer Alison Owen, worked in the entertainment industry. The singer is the sister of Game of Thrones actor Alfie Allen.
Allen added: "I feel that really left some bad scars that I don't want to repeat with my children." "I chose to step back and focus on them, and I'm happy I did because I think they are very capable people."
Allen currently lives in New York City with her daughters and her husband, Stranger Things star David Harbour, whom she married in 2020.
