The spokesperson for the Fatah movement, Dr. Jamal Nazzal, expressed his frustration with the comparison between the popularity of Hamas and Fatah following the recent events in the Gaza Strip, saying: "What do we want from popularity if I buy it with the blood of our people? Let Fatah's popularity go to hell, (...) in popularity if I buy my popularity with the blood of my people."
He said during an interview with "Al Arabiya" on Friday evening that the focus should be on practical steps that preserve the life of the people, whether these steps are actions or refraining from other actions, saying: "I preserve the blood of my people, sometimes what is important is what we do not do - not what we do - for the enemy is lurking for us and we know what he wants, and the art in politics is to deprive the enemy of what he wants so he suffers while waiting."
He added that "there is no alternative to national consensus on the rule of Gaza, regardless of how the aggression ends, there is no choice but for the Palestinian people to be united, this is what we want and strive for," emphasizing that the ball is now in Hamas's court as it is the ruler of Gaza, saying: "Hamas can contact President Mahmoud Abbas and place the responsibility on him, and I trust that he can bear it, and open the doors of the world and countries to rebuild Gaza."
He affirmed that the American step to punish extremist Israeli settlers in the West Bank is "late and minimal," pointing out the participation of thousands of settlers in acts of intimidation and terrorism against the Palestinian people in the West Bank.
Regarding the changing position of the United States and some Western countries on recognizing the establishment of a Palestinian state, he called on those countries to prove their good intentions by initiating recognition of the Palestinian state, explaining that European recognition depends on Israel's positions.
He continued, "The European formula has become yes to Palestine within the framework of the two-state solution, but if this comes as a result of negotiations meaning if Israel kindly agrees to Palestinian independence, then Europe will agree, and we will not accept any formula less than full, permanent, and actual independence, and not formulations to end the crisis."
