All four llamas living in Waterloo Park were unharmed after a fire broke out in their enclosure.
One witness told CTV News it was a chaotic scene as the animals tried to escape the flames spreading through their shelter at Eby Farmstead along Laurel Road.
Jesse Schultz Roy, who saw the fire from a passing LRT train, said, "The llamas were running all over the yard, and the smoke was rising thickly."
Richard Hebditch, head of the Waterloo Fire Department, said firefighters responded immediately, arriving at the scene shortly after 3 p.m. to find the building completely engulfed in flames and thick smoke rising from the area.
Hebditch said there were no injuries among the animals, staff, or civilians. "The fire spread very quickly."
Despite no injuries, some say this should be a wake-up call to move the animals to safer locations.
City staff were able to safely relocate the llamas while firefighters contained the burning building.
Officials in the City of Waterloo said they do not have an estimate of the damages yet, but they say the damage is significant.
