The search for Antonio Madeira is approaching nearly three months, as his family told CP24 that they are no closer to answers than they were after his disappearance from his neighborhood in the west end last July. Madeira, 76, has been missing for just over 10 weeks, last seen on July 12, sometime between 10:30 and 11 a.m., near Winona Drive and Mulberry Crescent in the Oakwood-Vaughan neighborhood. The missing man is described as five feet tall and weighs 150 pounds with a thin build, tanned skin, hazel eyes, short white balding hair, and a full white beard. On the day he disappeared, he was wearing a black or dark jacket with a distinctive large white stripe on each arm, light khaki pants, white or light-colored shoes, and a multicolored baseball cap. He was also seen carrying his wallet and keys.

Madeira, who speaks Portuguese and understands Spanish and Italian, struggles with English according to his family, and also walks with a slight but distinctive limp. He often clasps his hands behind his back and is a well-known resident in the Oakwood-Vaughan neighborhood. Since Madeira’s disappearance, his distraught family has been putting up posters in several Toronto neighborhoods he may have frequented. They have also searched parks, pathways, yards, shelters among other places in an effort to locate him. More recently, the search for Madeira has expanded its focus outside the city, especially in rural or wooded areas. Several citizen groups have volunteered to help in the search, and some organizations even brought special police dogs, but so far no specific information about Madeira’s whereabouts, alive or dead, has been revealed, according to his son.

In the same regard, Michael Madeira said it is the worst thing in the world and really hard to bear: "We haven't found a shoe or wallet or cap, we are just asking everyone to keep watch," he also stated that in the first few weeks after his father’s disappearance, there were some possible sightings but ultimately nothing came of it and admitted the search is now "a bit stalled."

As part of their investigation, Toronto police initially set up a command center near Madeira’s home, but at this stage, they are only "following up on information provided by the community in the form of leads and sightings," according to TPS media officer David Hopkinson.

Michael, who said his father is likely suffering from undiagnosed dementia, said a long time has passed since his disappearance and people have started to believe he has been found. Unfortunately, this is not the case, and he added: "He is still missing and we are still searching," adding that anyone who wants to help find his father should contact him via Facebook or Instagram. "Our concern now is that the weather is changing, we need to get some answers before the snow falls." The Madeira family is asking anyone who sees Antonio to immediately call 911 and stay with him, if possible, until emergency responders arrive. Both the police and Madeira’s son said he is likely to look unkempt and may be confused and scared.
