A woman reported swept into the sea is being searched for in southwest Newfoundland after a wave struck her home during Fiona storm. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Newfoundland say the 73-year-old woman was displaced from her home yesterday morning as hurricane Fiona hit the town of Port aux Basques at about 10 a.m. local time.
The police also stated that the woman was last seen inside her home just moments before the wave hit the house, causing part of the basement to be destroyed. They say search and rescue teams, the Coast Guard, and government air services were called in to assist in the search, which was delayed due to harsh weather conditions yesterday.
The Port aux Basques area was devastated by record-breaking storms that caused huge waves, tore homes from their foundations and swept them into the sea, with the town’s mayor, Brian Button, saying today that officials in the town of 4000 people are still assessing the damage caused by the storm, which he said is likely worse than initially expected.
