More human remains were found in Lake Mead over the weekend, less than 7 days after a body was discovered in a barrel.

National Park Service rangers responded to a call Saturday afternoon reporting human remains in Callville Bay.

Clark County coroner is assisting in determining the cause of death, according to the NPS, which said "no further information is available at this time."

The second set of human remains found in Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the country, was discovered as water levels continued to drop.

According to Las Vegas Metro Police, the first body discovered on May 1 is most likely a homicide victim who died from a gunshot wound "sometime in the mid-1970s to early 1980s based on the clothing and shoes found with the victim."

Lieutenant Ray Spencer said, "The lake has dried up significantly over the past fifteen years," noting that "it’s likely we will find additional bodies dumped in Lake Mead" as water levels drop further.

Approximately 40 million people in the West rely on water from the Colorado River and its two largest reservoirs - Lake Mead and Lake Powell - where levels have dropped at a dangerously rapid rate over the past few years amid the severe drought caused by climate change.

The police stated that they will take necessary measures to examine the bodies and open an investigation into this case and launch a search operation for new bodies in cooperation with the water authorities responsible for the lake.
