British Prime Minister Boris Johnson finally succumbed to the pressure of the movement calling for his departure after the resignation of dozens of ministers and senior officials in his government and the increasing demands among lawmakers for his resignation. He appeared weak and isolated outside his residence in "Downing Street" (the headquarters of the government) to confirm that he will resign from the post of Prime Minister in Britain.

Since yesterday, political pressure on Johnson has intensified, and the last hours before his resignation announcement saw intensive efforts and continuous pressures from his political circle and some prominent members of his party to force him to leave and vacate the position after a series of successive scandals.

Al Jazeera’s correspondent in London, Mina Harbalu, said that resignations in Johnson's government within 48 hours included more than 55 ministers, ministers of state, and deputy ministers, among them the Ministers of Justice, Interior, Industry, Finance, Health, Motherhood and Childhood, and the State for Technology and Media, in addition to a large number of senior officials and Conservative deputies.

Despite Johnson’s resignation, he is still struggling to remain as head of a caretaker government, but Al Jazeera’s correspondent mentioned that the ministers and party deputies who rebelled against him said they would not allow him to continue at the helm of power, and they will look for someone to run the country, awaiting the election of a leader for them in October.

Last-hour negotiations
The support Johnson enjoyed evaporated in what Reuters described as "one of the most turbulent days in modern British political history," with the arrival of Nadhim Zahawi, the Finance Minister appointed by Johnson on Tuesday, joining the calls for his resignation.

Zahawi and other ministers in the government went to Downing Street on Wednesday evening with a senior representative of MPs outside the government to inform Johnson that the game was over.

At first, Johnson refused to leave and seemed determined to cling to his authority, so he dismissed Michael Gove, one of the most prominent members of his ministerial team who was among the first to tell him that he should resign, in an attempt to reaffirm his authority.

But by Thursday morning, with a successive number of resignations, it became clear that his position was untenable.

Zahawi wrote on Twitter, "This is an unsustainable situation and will only get worse for you, the Conservative Party, and most importantly, the entire country. You must do the right thing and leave now."

Some of those who remained in their posts, including Defense Minister Ben Wallace, said that what prevents them from leaving is their commitment to maintaining the country's security.
