German Economy Minister Robert Habeck called on Canada to release a gas turbine listed in the sanctions against Russia, which is vital for gas supplies to Europe.
In statements to Bloomberg Agency, Habeck, who is also German Vice-Chancellor Olaf Scholz, said that there is a need to return the turbine to the Nord Stream 1 line before the maintenance of the line begins next Monday.
The minister said that releasing the turbine would remove Russian President Vladimir Putin's excuse for keeping the line closed.
Habeck added in the meeting held late yesterday Wednesday via phone: "I will be the first to fight for a stronger EU sanctions package, but strong sanctions mean that they must harm and hurt Russia and Putin more than they harm our economy, and based on that I ask for understanding that we are forced to remove Putin's excuse with the turbine."
