As Canadians face increasing financial pressures, they are unable to donate to charities as much as before, according to a new report.
These same financial pressures mean that charities like food banks are witnessing a huge increase in demand from those who rely on them.
In Toronto, Ontario, the Daily Bread Food Bank has seen a sharp rise in the number of people depending on their services.
A woman who spoke to CTV News said she was 66 years old and receives about $1500 a month from her pension, an amount that doesn't go far in an expensive city like Toronto.
She also said: "I think the government needs to think more about seniors," explaining that she visits the food bank once a week. We should have enough money to buy food from the store. It is humiliating to come here and ask for food."
More Canadians are turning to charities like food banks to meet basic needs. But at the same time, donations have decreased – 25 percent of Canadians say they plan to give less this year than they did in the past.
