A massive Russian plane grounded at Toronto Pearson International Airport in February is causing a hefty bill.

The Russian cargo plane belonging to the airline Volga-Dnepr has been grounded in Toronto since February 27 after the Canadian government closed its airspace to Russian aircraft operators.

The ban on Russian aircraft operators entering Canadian airspace is still in effect, meaning the plane is still not allowed to leave Canada.

According to the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA), which operates Toronto Pearson, 74 cents per minute is being charged to the aircraft owner for parking.

GTAA spokesperson Ryan White told CTV News Toronto, "The cost of parking at the airport reached $1,065.60 for every 24 hours." The plane was grounded at Toronto Pearson for 88 days, meaning the owner has accumulated over $93,000 in fees, excluding taxes.

White said he could not comment further on the fees, or whether they have sent an invoice to the airline, for legal reasons.

In February, the Antonov An-124 arrived in Canada from China, via Anchorage and Russia. The plane planned to leave Toronto shortly after arriving in Canada, but that flight was canceled.

The Canadian Transportation Agency said the plane was prevented from departing due to the ban on Russian-owned aircraft in Canadian airspace.

In a statement to CTV News Toronto on Thursday, the Canadian Transportation Agency said it does not plan to allow the plane to leave. The agency said, "The NOTAM is still in place, and there are no plans to review or change the NOTAM at this time." "The Canadian Transportation Agency has informed Russian authorities about the NOTAM system.
