In the aftermath of the horrific mass shooting at an elementary school in Texas, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau indicated that the Canadian government will move forward with new gun control measures "in the coming weeks."

In previous parliaments, the Liberals made changes to Canadian gun laws, including strengthening background check requirements and banning over 1500 models and variants of "assault" firearms.

And although some elements of their plans have not borne fruit, Trudeau has promised to proceed.

As part of his mandate, and stemming from Liberal campaign promises, Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino has been tasked with advancing a series of gun control measures, including the recent announcement of regulations related to firearm licensing verification and commercial record keeping.

As for what is pending, which could soon come from the federal government, the Liberals have promised the following:

- Pursuing banned firearm owners and requiring them to resell to the government for destruction or "rendering them inoperable".

- Moving to ban the sale or transfer of high-capacity magazines that can hold more than the legal number of bullets.

- Tightening maximum penalties on firearm smuggling.

- Legislation that would allow for the immediate removal of firearms if the owner is deemed a threat to themselves or others.

Speaking about the shooting in the United States, the Public Safety Minister said it is a reminder that "we still have a lot of work to do" in Canada.

"It's not just about writing sensible and responsible laws and it's not just about investing more in law enforcement ... it's about stopping crime from happening in the first place."
