In the aftermath of the horrific mass shooting at an elementary school in Texas, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau indicated that the Canadian government will move forward with new gun control measures "in the coming weeks."

In previous parliaments, the Liberals made changes to Canadian gun laws, including strengthening background check requirements and banning more than 1500 models and variants of "assault" firearms.

And although some elements of their plans have not yet borne fruit - including their mandatory gun buyback program - in the 2021 federal election, Trudeau promised to move forward.

As part of his mandate, and based on the Liberal campaign promises, Minister of Public Safety Marco Mendicino was tasked with advancing a series of gun control measures, including the recent announcement of regulations regarding firearm licensing verification and commercial record keeping.

As for what is great and what can be done soon by the federal government, the Liberals promised the following:

Continuing to require owners of prohibited firearms to sell them back to the government for destruction or to "render them inoperable".

Moving to ban the sale or transfer of high-capacity magazines that can hold more than the legal number of bullets.

Demanding the permanent amendment of long-term licenses "so they cannot carry more than five rounds".

Providing funding for provinces and territories that move forward with banning handguns in their municipalities.

Strengthening maximum penalties for firearm smuggling and trafficking.

Scheduling the implementation of "red flag laws" that would allow firearms to be immediately removed if the owner is deemed a threat to themselves or others.
