Paramedics and an eyewitness said police shot a man near an elementary school in the Port Union area of Scarborough this afternoon, Thursday.

Paramedics told local media that they were called to the corner of Lawrence Avenue East and Port Union Road at 1:24 p.m. for the shooting.

About 30 minutes before the shooting, police were called to Maberley Crescent and Oxhorn Road, east of the shooting site, to report a person carrying a rifle in the street.

Police said an officer used a firearm and shot a suspect hitting him at least once.

Police reported that the suspect is now in police custody and his exact condition is currently known.

At 2:40 p.m., Toronto police said a special investigations unit was called to the scene to investigate.

A video obtained by local media from a witness at the scene shows officers cordoning off a section of the eastern lane, directly opposite William G. Davies Public School.

Where a body covered with an orange cloth can be seen on the sidewalk.

Paramedics said they did not transport anyone from the scene.

On the other hand, a man who happened to pick up his sick son from a nearby school before the incident said the person who was shot also appeared to have a bike. He explained, "The police shot him then tried to perform CPR and then put a blanket on him."

Another witness said they heard "three quick shots" then saw officers trying to revive a male on the sidewalk.

Adding that the officers told him they were searching for a man on a bike and a rifle in the area.

Meanwhile, the Toronto District School Board said Charlotte Town Junior Public School and Centennial Road Junior Public School are in hold and secure mode, while Joseph Howe Senior Public School and Sir Oliver Mowat Collegiate Institute are all in lockdown due to the incident.

Police officers later said the incident "does not pose a greater threat to public safety."

Police also said parents were asked to pick up their children from William Davies Junior Public School now as it is no longer locked down.
