The rescue teams in Libya managed to recover more than 250 unidentified bodies from the victims of the floods that struck the city of Derna, while the Libyan Red Crescent considered that the situation has become very difficult in recovering the bodies from under the rubble in the city following the extensive destruction caused by Hurricane "Daniel".

* Recovering bodies from the shores of the affected city

The General Staff of the Government of National Unity of Libya, which has ended its term, announced the recovery of more than 250 unidentified bodies from the shores of Derna, with the participation of the Coast Guard and port security, in cooperation with other Libyan and friendly rescue teams. They indicated that work is ongoing to search for the missing in the sea and to recover the bodies by the Coast Guard until late at night, according to the Anadolu Agency.

For his part, the official spokesperson for the Libyan Red Crescent, Tawfiq Al-Shukri, stated that the situation has become very difficult in recovering the bodies from under the rubble in Derna, noting that the matter requires heavy equipment and machinery. He also pointed out that the bodies that come out of the sea are being recovered immediately, whether in Derna or in the neighboring shores.

Al-Shukri confirmed the continuation of the assistance process for the survivors and the displaced families of the city of Derna, saying that the situation is better in terms of distributing aid and needs for the citizens.

* Plan to reactivate the hospitals that are out of service

For his part, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Health in the Government of National Unity, Muhiuddin Al-Nuwaji, stated that the plan to reactivate the hospitals that are out of service due to Hurricane Daniel will require a period of no less than six months.

Al-Nuwaji mentioned in press statements that his government’s plan to reactivate the affected hospitals includes three phases, explaining that "the first phase involves assessing the damage to these hospitals, the second is reconstruction, and the third is providing equipment and implementing infrastructure projects."

Regarding the estimated amounts required to complete the three phases of the plan, Al-Nuwaji said: "We have initial financial estimates, which are about one hundred million dinars (20 million dollars) for medical equipment, and about 75 million dinars for infrastructure projects."

The International Organization for Migration announced the registration of more than 43,000 displaced people in cities in eastern Libya due to the floods and torrents that hit their cities.

Hurricane Daniel struck eastern Libya on September 11, resulting in heavy rainfall leading to the collapse of two dams in the city of Derna, causing water to flow powerfully and rising several meters in a normally dry river bed, sweeping away parts of the city with its buildings and infrastructure.

The floods led to the death of 3,351 people, according to the latest provisional official toll announced by the Ministry of Health in the government assigned by the Libyan parliament. However, humanitarian organizations and Libyan authorities fear that the number of victims is much higher due to the estimated number of missing persons in the thousands.
