Anadolu Agency reported from Libyan medical sources the death of about 2800 people due to the floods that swept through cities in eastern Libya because of the Mediterranean cyclone "Daniel" that struck the country early Sunday.
The Presidential Council in Libya announced in a statement that Derna, Shahat, and Al-Bayda in Cyrenaica in the east are disaster-stricken areas due to the floods that hit them.
In the statement, it said, "Feeling our responsibility and given the grave repercussions of the disaster, we declare that area a disaster zone and request brotherly and friendly countries and international organizations to provide assistance and support."
In a special statement to Anadolu, a member of the crisis room of the Libyan Red Crescent Society said, "The total statistics that reached the room from all branches of the Red Crescent amounted to 2800 dead."
The source mentioned, according to Anadolu, that "the statistics include all the affected cities that suffered flooding due to the cyclone that struck eastern Libya," affirming that the dead "include those who drowned or died due to the collapse of residential buildings."
He confirmed that "the number of people stranded in the affected areas, for whom rescue operations are currently underway, has reached (7) thousand families," in addition to "a large number of missing persons who have not yet been identified as many have not been reported missing, especially in Derna where telephone communications have been cut off."
The government appointed by the Libyan parliament had declared the city of Derna a disaster area after it was hit by Storm Daniel coming from Greece, whose effects reached other regions and cities in the east of the country.
