It was necessary to evacuate a number of people to safety on Saturday afternoon, as heavy rains flooded parking lots, streets, and highways across the Greater Toronto Area.
The heavy rainfall also caused leaks at Toronto Pearson International Airport. The airport stated that the water is under control, and cleaning efforts are ongoing.
While the airport is operational, it announced that the rain has led to numerous diversions and ground delays. As of 11:15 PM, over 14 percent of scheduled flights arriving and departing were canceled.
Toronto Pearson Airport stated in a social media post, "This has a significant impact on passengers."
Toronto and many areas in Southern Ontario were under several weather warnings throughout the day, including a tornado, severe thunderstorms, and rain.
The Canadian Environmental and Climate Change Agency (ECCC) stated that some locations experienced 100 millimeters of rain on Saturday afternoon. Between 1991 and 2020, Toronto typically received between 68.5 and 71.9 millimeters of rainfall during August.
During the rainfall warning in Toronto, the ECCC indicated that additional rainfall is expected to lead to more impacts tonight and into Sunday.
"A slight lull in thunderstorms is expected overnight before heating takes hold on Sunday during the day and thunderstorms become more active."
The Ontario Provincial Police reported that Highway 427 between Highway 409 and Highway 401 was flooded, as well as the on-ramps and off-ramps to and from Highway 401.
The City of Toronto stated that The Don Valley Parkway off-ramp to Bayview Avenue was temporarily closed due to flooding.
Fast-moving waters quickly flooded roads in Mississauga, necessitating the closure of intersections due to flooding. Fire crews in the city also responded to rescue calls, including one in which a pedestrian clung to light poles at Dundas and Queen Federica, which were submerged, and was assisted by rescuers to safety.
Many individuals, including children, were rescued by firefighters from their vehicles that were stuck in deep floodwaters.
The City of Mississauga stated: "We are working hard to clear the areas as quickly as possible, and please allow workers to do their job in the city."
Toronto Police had to remind motorists not to drive through flooded roads after some vehicles were submerged. The police also reported flooding under some bridges throughout the city.
The rain also forced Woodbine Entertainment to cancel the remainder of the King's Plate Live race due to "unsafe racing conditions."
The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) reported that it recorded 81 millimeters of rain within an hour. The federal agency adds that heavy rains can lead to water pooling on roads and flash flooding.
Meanwhile, a tornado touched down in Ayr, Ontario, causing widespread damage, and Canadian Environment reported that rainy conditions are expected to continue into Sunday.
