Twenty-four Liberal MPs have signed a letter calling on their leader, federal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, to step down from leading the Liberal Party of Canada, according to what Radio Canada learned today.

Two sources in the chamber where a meeting of federal parliamentary caucus members is held in Ottawa confirmed that only one MP requested a secret ballot on Trudeau's leadership of the party.

According to these two sources, this position does not have the support of the majority of Liberal MPs, who seem to still support Trudeau.

A source in Trudeau's office told Radio Canada that the Prime Minister is willing to listen to the arguments of the MPs challenging his leadership, but he does not intend to relinquish the leadership of the Liberals in the upcoming general election against Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre.

Liberal MPs who do not agree with Trudeau's decision to remain in leadership will have the option to leave the Liberal parliamentary caucus, according to the same source.

Polls have shown for over a year that the Conservatives are ahead of the Liberals in voting intentions.

In recent months, voices from within the party have started to rise, demanding that Trudeau step down from leadership and make way for someone else to lead the party in the upcoming elections, which are scheduled to take place by October 2025.

These demands have emerged following the Liberal Party's loss of two strongholds in by-elections: the first is the "Toronto–St. Paul's" riding in Toronto, which they lost to the Conservatives in late June, and the second is the "LaSalle–Émard–Vedene" riding in Montreal, which they lost to the Bloc Québécois in mid-September.

For weeks, some Liberal MPs have been calling for the party leadership to have a clear action plan for the upcoming elections, as they feel that the Liberal ship is sailing without a compass.

In Quebec, party members are calling for a better strategy to confront the Bloc Québécois, which is leading in voting intentions in the only Canadian province with a majority French-speaking population.

For several months, various sources in Liberal circles have acknowledged that there is a delay in developing the necessary plans for the upcoming elections.
