Former Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi has officially announced his candidacy for the leadership of the Alberta New Democratic Party.

Nenshi announced his campaign on Monday afternoon, during a video posted on social media.

He highlighted housing, affordability, and healthcare as some of the key issues facing Alberta residents.

Nenshi said in a press release: “The people of Alberta deserve a smart and capable government that focuses on the values and priorities we all share.”

“We need a government that focuses on prosperity and opportunities. On affordability and fairness. On our health and education, in addition to working on preventing the effects of fires, floods, and droughts.

Nenshi served as Calgary's mayor for 11 years.

Rachel Notley announced last January that she would step down as party leader once a replacement is chosen.

According to Alberta Elections, five people have officially announced their candidacy.

Among them are Kathleen Janly, Rakhi Pancholi, Sarah Hoffman, Jodi Calahoo Stonehouse, and Alberta Federation of Labour President Gil McGowan.

All candidates must register by Friday.

Voting for the new leader will begin on May 22 and the new leader will be named on June 22.

Members of the New Democratic Party are allowed to vote for the leader online, by mail, or by phone.

Voters must have an active membership as of April 22.

Any Albertan aged 14 or older can become a party member.
