The Irish singer and songwriter Sinéad O’Connor died of "natural causes" last July, the coroner announced today, Tuesday.
London Metropolitan Police said the singer's death is not considered suspicious after she was found unconscious in a home in Southeast London on July 26, and O’Connor was 56 years old.
The Southwark Coroner's Court confirmed that O’Connor died of natural causes, which means circumstances not related to illness or external forces, but did not provide details.
The singer began her artistic career singing on the streets of Dublin and rose to global fame with her cover of Prince’s song "Nothing Compares 2 U" released in 1990.
O’Connor publicly announced her mental illness and was hospitalized after her teenage son Shane died by suicide in 2022.
O’Connor, who remained uncommitted throughout her life, was famous for her frank political and cultural stances and harsh criticism of the Roman Catholic Church, long before widespread allegations of sexual abuse by clergy became widespread.
Thousands of fans lined the streets of Bray, the Irish town she considered her home, during a funeral procession in August, and Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar attended alongside artist Paul David Housen.
