Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to appoint a replacement for outgoing Labour Minister Seamus O'Regan, whose resignation takes effect today.
O'Regan announced on Thursday that he would step down from the Liberal government for family reasons, although he intends to remain in his role as a Member of Parliament until the next federal election.
Trudeau's office did not clarify whether a new member would be appointed to the cabinet or if other ministers would be affected.
A source familiar with the matter, who requested anonymity, stated that a broader cabinet reshuffle is not expected.
The Prime Minister's Office had previously confirmed that the cabinet would hold a brief meeting today for the first time since the shock loss of the Liberals in last month's by-election in Toronto.
O'Regan was appointed Minister of Labour in 2021 and became the minister responsible for seniors last summer.
