Belgian media reported today, Sunday, that European Council President Charles Michel is scheduled to run in the European Parliament elections next June.

Michel's decision means he will leave his position as President of the European Council, which brings together the heads of state and government of the bloc, if he wins the elections.

Michel told the Belgian newspapers "Le Soir" and "De Standaard" that EU leaders may then discuss naming his successor at the end of next June or early next August.

The two newspapers quoted the former Belgian Prime Minister as saying that "arranging the succession is relatively easy."

Michel told the two newspapers that he will run at the top of the list of the Liberal "Belgian Reform Movement" party in the elections scheduled for June 9, describing 2024 as a crucial election year in Europe and the whole world.

Michel added that "the European project is at a crossroads, and there is a need to strengthen the legitimacy of European democracy."

Michel said he aims to play an active role, adding, "I would like to be one of the team members who build the European project and present myself to continue serving it."

Michel said he intends to run in a way that does not affect his responsibilities in coordinating EU summits.

The 48-year-old man has held the position of President of the European Council since December 2019, and will continue in his position until the members of the European Parliament take their oath on next July 16, and he will step down if elected.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who took office at the same time as Charles Michel's inauguration, has largely overshadowed his role.
