After more than five months of war, the UN Security Council on Monday adopted its first resolution demanding an ”immediate ceasefire” in Gaza, with the United States abstaining from voting after previously blocking attempts to issue a resolution by resorting to the veto.
The resolution, supported by 14 members with one abstention, “calls for an immediate ceasefire during the month of Ramadan” which began two weeks ago, to “lead to a permanent ceasefire”, and ”demands the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages”.
The United States did not use its veto against the resolution and abstained from voting, making it the first ceasefire resolution adopted by the Council after four previous failures.
The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the United States withdrew from its firm position in the Security Council, where a few days ago it linked the ceasefire to the release of prisoners (Article 1).
China and Russia used the veto on the previous resolution partly because they supported a ceasefire without the release of the "Israeli" prisoners.
Russia and China supported the current resolution, along with Algeria and other countries.
The United States did not use its veto today against the new text calling for a ceasefire without the condition of releasing prisoners.
This is a clear retreat from the consistent American position in the Security Council since the start of the war.
This withdrawal harms the military effort and the efforts aimed at freeing the prisoners because it gives Hamas hope that international pressure will allow it to accept a ceasefire without releasing our hostages.
Prime Minister Netanyahu explained last night that if the United States withdraws from its principled position, he will not send the Israeli delegation to the United States.
On the other hand, Ben Gvir said via the X platform that the United Nations is a barren land.
For his part, Galant said we have no moral right to stop the war on Gaza without recovering the abductees.
The French representative to the Security Council also said that the Council's silence towards Gaza is painful and the crisis must be resolved.
Explaining that the two-state solution is the only one that ensures peace.
For his part, the Slovenian representative to the Security Council said that today we witness the beginning of the end of the pain and suffering of civilians in Gaza.
Adding that the ceasefire resolution in Gaza is a clear signal from the Security Council that this war must stop.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, also commented on the resolution by saying:
The Security Council has just approved the long-awaited resolution regarding Gaza demanding an immediate ceasefire.
Adding, the Council agreed on the immediate and unconditional release of all prisoners.
Clarifying that this resolution must be implemented and its failure will be unforgivable.
The White House said that abstaining from voting on a Security Council resolution on a ceasefire in Gaza does not represent a shift in American policy.
Kirby said, we hoped to discuss the Rafah operation with the Israeli delegation but if they decide not to come we will discuss it with the Israeli Defense Minister.
Meanwhile, the Palestinian Foreign Ministry said that the ceasefire must be permanent and sustainable.
Also, Lapid said that Netanyahu’s statement challenging the Americans is another bad and sad attempt to divert attention from the conscription law at the expense of Israel’s relations with the United States, which is an irresponsible action by a prime minister who has lost the ability to govern.
France welcomed the adoption of Resolution 2728 regarding the ceasefire in Gaza.
Hamas movement welcomed the Security Council’s call today for an immediate ceasefire and affirms the necessity of reaching a permanent ceasefire leading to the withdrawal of all Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip and the return of the displaced to their homes from which they were expelled.
Clarifying, we confirm our readiness to engage in a prisoner exchange process immediately leading to the release of prisoners held by both parties.
For his part, the Russian delegate to the UN Security Council said if the resolution indicated a permanent ceasefire in Gaza it would have been more precise preventing any interpretations.
Adding, "Israel" is carrying out collective punishment against the Palestinians and do not forget that more than 30,000 have been killed in Gaza so far.
Comments
