The Israeli prison service announced that a prominent Palestinian prisoner died in Israeli detention early Tuesday after a hunger strike that lasted nearly three months, at a time when tensions are already escalating between Israel and the Palestinians.

Kheder Adnan, a leader in the Palestinian Islamic Jihad movement, is the first Palestinian prisoner to die since Palestinian prisoners began launching long hunger strikes about a decade ago.

His death was announced after an 86-day hunger strike, increasing the likelihood of renewed violence between Israel and Palestinian armed factions amid rising violence in the West Bank.

On the other hand, large crowds of Palestinians in the city of Ramallah protested against what they called the assassination of prisoner Kheder Adnan, raising the Palestinian flag and threatening Israel with revenge through chants that rose from their throats.

The International Committee of the Red Cross offered its condolences to the Palestinian people and the family of the deceased in a statement saying: "We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Mr. Kheder Adnan at this difficult time, and we call on the Israeli authorities to release his body so that his family can arrange a dignified burial ceremony according to their customs and beliefs and begin mourning."

Meanwhile, the Israeli occupation forces closed a road leading to the Al-Auja spring north of the city of Jericho with an iron gate.

Palestinian Prime Minister Dr. Mohammad Shtayyeh commented on the incident saying that Palestine is saddened by the continuous martyrs, yesterday it was the martyr youth Jibril Al-Ludaa, and this morning Sheikh Kheder Adnan was martyred after his heroic hunger strike that lasted for 87 consecutive days to end his detention.

He added, the Cabinet holds the occupation, its prison administration, and all its agencies fully responsible for the martyrdom of Sheikh Kheder Adnan, considering it a deliberate assassination crime by refusing his release request, medically neglecting him, and keeping him in his cell despite the severity of his health condition.

He also said, we call for the immediate release of all prisoners, especially the sick, women, and children.

Adding, we offer our deepest condolences to the martyr’s family, the prisoners' movement, and all our people on this great loss. The martyr Kheder Adnan remains a symbol of steadfastness, challenge, and determination.

Meanwhile, Kheder Adnan’s lawyer said he filed an appeal to the Israeli Supreme Court to prevent the autopsy of Sheikh Kheder Adnan’s body and to deliver it to his family.

It is worth mentioning that violence between the two sides has escalated recently to levels that worry the international community, with major moves to prevent the escalation of violence to uncontrollable levels.

In this context, Palestinian sources said that the Islamic Jihad movement is still holding internal discussions about the extent of its response or a lack thereof, amid Arab and international contacts and pressures on the movement to refrain from responding.

On the other hand, Kheder Adnan’s widow (Randa Mousa) said after the announcement of his death today, Tuesday: "We do not want bloodshed, and we do not want rocket firing. Whoever did not support the sheikh, we do not want revenge for him. My message to the factions and to everyone who failed Kheder: enjoy your life and store your weapons until they rust."

During a press conference in front of her house, she said that the sheikh achieved the utmost wish when he ascended as a martyr.

She continued in a sharply critical tone towards the Palestinian factions: "We bleed to you the news of the sheikh's martyrdom, who is our pride and honor even though we wished he would return to us victorious," holding every negligent party accountable by saying, "We will hold accountable everyone who was negligent, especially since Sheikh Adnan was left alone."

She confirmed that the sheikh’s family will not open a mourning house but will receive congratulations on the martyrdom of her husband, who attained martyrdom according to her words.

It is noteworthy that shortly after announcing Adnan Khader’s death, Palestinian activists in the Gaza Strip launched a barrage of rockets at southern Israel.

The Palestinians called for a general strike in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, and protests are expected later today.

Itamar Ben Gvir, the extremist Israeli minister responsible for prisons, raised the alert level in those facilities in what his office described as a precautionary measure against anticipated riots.

Palestinian prisoners have been on hunger strikes for many years protesting their detention conditions and to obtain concessions from Israel.

This tactic has become a last resort for resistance against what Palestinians consider unjust prisons.

Prisoners often suffer from serious diseases due to their refusal to eat, but deaths are rare.

Islamic Jihad spokesman Dawood Shihab described Adnan’s killing as a "complete crime for which the Israeli occupation bears full and direct responsibility."

About 200 people gathered outside Adnan’s house in the town of Arraba in the West Bank, holding signs bearing his picture and calling for revenge.
