Travelers from Quebec hoping to visit New York City by train this summer will have to wait until fall.
Passenger trains between Montreal and the Big Apple are not scheduled to operate until September due to maintenance work on the tracks after Amtrak struck a deal with Canadian National Railway last month.
Schedules for U.S. passenger railroads show that service out of Manhattan will not go further on the so-called Adirondack route from Saratoga Springs, located north of New York State, from May 20 to September 9.
The extended schedule goes beyond the peak season and sets an end date 10 weeks after the planned date, according to a joint statement released by the rail companies on May 18.
Attempts to book tickets for a summer trip on the Adirondack line lead to a message on Amtrak's website stating "No trains or buses are scheduled on the specified travel date," indicating the next available day is September 9 or 10, depending on the start date.
Amtrak stated that service will now be suspended until September 8 "as CN continues to work on its line in Canada."
Spokesman Jason Abrams said in an email on Sunday, "We apologize to our customers for any inconvenience."
CN, which owns the tracks north of the border, confirmed the extension of maintenance for the country’s largest railway line.
No statements regarding the halted service have been posted on the websites of either organization.
