Liberal MP Pam Damoff announced she will not run again in the upcoming federal election, stating that she has faced misogyny, disrespectful dialogue in politics, and threats to her life.

She added that she is proud of the time she has spent in politics, but it is no longer right for her, and it is time to turn the page to a new chapter. Damoff has represented Oakville North-Burlington, a region west of Toronto, since 2015.

She also announced her planned departure in a message posted on her Facebook page.

She said that the current tone of politics is driven by a desire for social media videos and likes, which is a radical shift in how politicians interact with each other and with the public.

She noted that the substance of political discourse has significantly degraded, and she fears that the misinformation and "lies" propagated by politicians are eroding trust in institutions.

Damoff continued in the statement: "The toxic drive for likes and clips on social media among elected officials has hindered constructive conversations and exacerbated the divide between us, diminishing our ability to show empathy towards one another."

She added: “The threats and misogyny I have faced as a Member of Parliament are the kind that often makes me fearful to go out in public, and this is not a sustainable or healthy way to live.”
