Canada is planning to designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), a branch of the Iranian armed forces, as a terrorist group, according to sources' statements to CTV News.
Dealing with a designated terrorist entity under Canadian criminal law is a crime, and charities can lose their status if they maintain ties with terrorist groups, and individuals associated with those groups can be denied entry into Canada.
In January, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told the public he was open to this move as long as it was done "responsibly." He made the comments during the vigil for the victims of Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752, which was shot down by the IRGC in Tehran on January 8, 2020.
Families of the victims have been urging Canada to designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization for years.
Canadian criminal law imposes severe penalties on individuals and organizations that deal with property or financial assets belonging to a designated entity.
