Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly announced yesterday, Tuesday, that her country has decided to stop arms exports to Israel in the future, although the motion approved by the House of Commons on Monday is not binding on Justin Trudeau's government.
Joly said in a press statement, "It is a real matter," commenting on the decision, after the majority of Liberal and government MPs voted in favor of a motion amended by the New Democratic Party.
Joly, whose ministry bears the legal responsibility for approving or rejecting export permits for military goods and technology, added that this decision is "important, and not symbolic change," confirming that from her point of view, Canada will no longer export "weapons to Israel."
Joly emphasized that "no weapons will be exported from now on, in accordance with the commitment outlined in Monday's decision," adding that the government "intends to fulfill its pledge" to the New Democratic Party.
