Reuters reported that Canada has allowed Airbus to use Russian titanium despite the sanctions imposed by Ottawa on VSMPO-Avisma.
Reuters noted that the state-backed Russian company VSMPO-Avisma has been the largest supplier of titanium in the industry for years.
Canadian Airbus stated in a press release reported by Reuters that the company is aware of the Canadian government's sanctions on VSMPO and has obtained the necessary permission to secure Airbus operations in compliance with the applicable sanctions.
According to Reuters, this move grants Airbus flexibility in its Canadian facilities where the Airbus A220 is now partially assembled.
However, according to experts, according to Reuters, this model of aircraft does not require a large number of titanium components, unlike the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787.
Reuters pointed out that the sanctions imposed on the Russian company VSMPO-Avisma could create problems when exporting aircraft manufactured abroad using Russian titanium to Canada, and such cases may also require special permits from the competent authorities.
Canadian Airbus has previously warned that restrictions on Russian titanium could deal a heavy blow to the Western aerospace industry, while the harm inflicted on the Russian economy would be minimal.
A source familiar with Canada's policy told Reuters: "Our sanctions should not cause so much harm that we ultimately significantly harm ourselves."
