Today, the Canadian government listed the "Samidon" network that advocates for Palestinian prisoners in the list of terrorist entities. The United States also announced sanctions against the network, which included a Canadian citizen associated with it.
Public Safety Minister of the Canadian government, Dominic LeBlanc, stated that activities of "Samidon" will now be categorized as crimes under the Criminal Code, thus Canadians are prohibited from donating to this network or providing any property for it to conduct activities.
"Samidon" is also known as the "Network of Solidarity with the Palestinian Prisoner," and Ottawa claims that the network has "close ties with" another group that Canada classifies as a terrorist entity, which is the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP / FPLP), and that it also "advances the interests" of the latter.
For its part, the U.S. Treasury described "Samidon" as a "fake charity operating as an international fundraising organization" for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, while in reality supporting terrorism against Israel.
The U.S. Treasury also designated Canadian citizen Khaled Barakat as a person affiliated with a terrorist group, claiming that he is part of the leadership of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and its fundraising division.
The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine is a secular, Marxist-Leninist Palestinian organization that emerged following the defeat of Arab armies in the June (1967) war against Israel and played a key role in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, despite its influence waning after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
"Samidon" did not immediately respond to a request from the Canadian Press for comment on its listing as a terrorist entity in Canada.
Last week, the Conservative Party of Canada (the official opposition in the House of Commons) called for "Samidon" to be listed as a terrorist entity, accusing the network of organizing several rallies in Canada where some participants openly called for the destruction of Israel.
