The European Union announced on the evening of Monday, April 17, 2023, that its ambassador in Khartoum was "assaulted" in his home in the Sudanese capital, where fierce battles have been raging since Saturday between the army and the Rapid Support Forces.
Foreign policy official for the Union Josep Borrell said in a tweet that "a few hours ago the European Union ambassador to Sudan was assaulted in his home," without clarifying whether the envoy sustained any injuries.
Borrell also emphasized that "the security of diplomatic premises and their staff is a core responsibility of the Sudanese authorities and is their duty under international law," condemning this "blatant violation of the Vienna Convention."
The European Union ambassador to Sudan is the 58-year-old Irish diplomat Aidan O'Hara.
The European Union's foreign affairs spokesperson Nabila Massrali announced that Ambassador O'Hara is fine, adding that the European Union mission in Khartoum has not been evacuated.
