The local community in northwest Toronto organized a protest on Saturday to memorialize Ado Boakai, a father of four who was killed in one of two seemingly random shootings in the neighborhood last weekend.

Dozens of people braved the cold to pay their respects to the 40-year-old Ghanaian man, who had arrived in Canada only three months before being shot and killed at a bus station near Jane Street and Driftwood Street.

Mayor Olivia Chow, surrounded by representatives of the Ghanaian community in the city and Toronto Police, said, “We have a strong community, we will not allow this cowardly act to spread fear in our hearts, because we want to show that we have a good community here.”

Boakai’s friends said he arrived in Canada with a work permit in November and began working on January 22 to support his wife and children back home.

One of his close friends, Richardson Adorso, told CP24 on Saturday that although Boakai didn’t talk much, he always listened and offered valuable advice to anyone who asked.

Adorso said emotionally, "I would describe him as a kind man, 'an angel on earth.'"

Boakai was at the bus station in the area on Saturday afternoon when an unknown suspect approached him and shot him. He was taken to the hospital where he was declared dead.

Less than 24 hours earlier, another shooting occurred at a bus station at the same intersection. In this case, a 16-year-old boy on his way to attend a volleyball game was shot in the face and left in life-threatening condition. Police last said he remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition with injuries that could change his life.

In both cases, police said the victims were “completely innocent.”

No arrests have been made.

Police said last week that investigators believe the same suspect or suspects are responsible for both shootings.

It is unclear what might have motivated the seemingly random attacks, but police also said the consecutive shootings bear "the fingerprints of gang activity.”

Police released a description of one suspect earlier this week. He is described as a Black man between 18 and 25 years old with a slim build.

Police said Friday that officers are looking for evidence in Hamilton related to the shootings but remained tight-lipped about what they were searching for.

Police earlier explained that the stolen car used by the suspect or suspects in both incidents was found abandoned in Hamilton.

In her remarks on Saturday, Chow directed a message to those responsible for the shootings, vowing to bring them to justice.

“To the killer or killers, do you think you can spread terror in the heart of the community? Forget it… We will track you down and imprison you because you can’t get away with this senseless violence.”
