The cold weather and rain have aided British Columbia in its fight against wildfires, but more than 1,300 people are still under evacuation orders in the province.

Additionally, 2,800 properties remain on evacuation alert. Most of these orders are located in the Central Kootenay region.

Bruce Ralston, Minister of Forests, said at a press conference on Tuesday: "Many parts of the province are experiencing cold and even humid weather, which is helping British Columbia crews make progress in extinguishing some of these fires."

He added: "Over the past seven days, 286 fires have been extinguished, including 44 fires in the last 24 hours alone."

There are over 345 active fires in British Columbia, including six fires that are considered notable wildfires.

While British Columbia is experiencing a respite in the weather, it is not expected to last, with a return to hot and dry weather patterns in the forecast for August.

Cliff Chapman, Regional Operations Director for the British Columbia Wildfire Service, said: "Currently, we expect a return to low to mid-range temperatures at the Kamloops fire center and the southeast fire center, which poses very challenging firefighting conditions for our crews and response resources in the field."
