About 3,000 employees at York University began a strike starting Monday morning after stalled negotiations with the post-secondary institution.
The union representing contract faculty members, teaching assistants, graduate students, research assistants, and part-time librarians had planned to strike on February 26 if no agreement was reached.
Irene Macintosh, communications officer for the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 3903, said the university had not put "a single offer on the table" after the union voted to strike Friday morning. She said the negotiating team was prepared to continue negotiating throughout the weekend.
In a statement to CP24, she said, "The employer clearly indicated that it has no interest in avoiding the strike and left the already struggling workers no choice but to proceed with the strike."
Macintosh added that access to eCLASS courses for instructors was suspended Sunday night.
The two parties have been negotiating for about eight months.
CP24 reached out to York University for comment.
The workers are expected to strike throughout Monday, with a march planned outside the York University subway station.
