Victoria police have arrested one person and are still investigating three suspicious fires that broke out in the heart of downtown early Friday morning.

A fire occurred outside the Gulf Center at the corner of Broad Street and View Street, damaging the exterior of the building.

Nearby patrol officers were called to the scene around 3:40 AM, and they extinguished the flames with fire extinguishers.

The police say a person was arrested shortly afterward and is in custody awaiting court appearance.

Another fire ignited in a garbage container on Yates Street around 3:55 AM.

Patrol officers responded to a resident’s call to extinguish the fire before firefighters arrived.

The police stated that both fires are being investigated as connected fires.

Police added that a small fire in a building near Cook Street was reported around 2 AM.

The fire was found in a fence and was quickly extinguished by firefighters without significant damage.

Investigators are asking anyone with video from these areas between 1:30 AM and 4:30 AM to save their footage and contact the VicPD Reports Office at 250-995-7654.

Exactly one week ago, on the evening of June 16, police were called to two fires in the James Bay area.

Both fires are being investigated as arson, including a fire that caused damage and destroyed six parked vehicles.
