An Spanish infant aged 17 months underwent the world's first successful intestinal transplant operation, from a donor who died of heart failure, according to "La Paz" hospital in Madrid, yesterday Tuesday.
The hospital added in a statement that "the child was discharged from the hospital in excellent condition at home with her parents."
It is worth mentioning that Spain is one of the leading countries worldwide in organ transplant surgeries, with more than 102 operations per million population carried out in 2021, a rate surpassed only by the United States, according to data from the Spanish Ministry of Health.
The infant "Emma" was diagnosed with intestinal failure when she was only one month old, because her intestines were very short, and her health deteriorated rapidly until she underwent a multi-organ transplant operation.
Her mother told reporters before thanking the donor's family and the doctors: "The good news is that life goes on, and Emma is very brave and proves every day that she wants to continue living."
