Diplomats confirmed on Sunday, December 10, 2023, that the United Nations General Assembly, composed of 193 countries, is likely to vote on Tuesday, December 12, on a draft resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire for humanitarian reasons in the ongoing conflict between the occupying entity and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

This step comes after the United States used its veto power on Friday against a similar demand in the UN Security Council.

In October, the General Assembly adopted a resolution with 121 votes in favor, 14 against, and 44 abstentions, calling for an "immediate, durable, and sustainable humanitarian truce leading to a cessation of hostilities in Gaza."

In a UN context, the Executive Board of the World Health Organization unanimously adopted a resolution on Sunday calling for immediate aid to Gaza to address the deteriorating health situation in the Palestinian territory.

The 34 member states of the organization's Executive Board unanimously adopted a resolution calling for the "immediate and unobstructed passage of humanitarian aid" to the Gaza Strip.

Earlier on Sunday, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned of the "catastrophic" impact of the war between the occupying entity and Hamas, now in its third month, on health in the Gaza Strip, affirming that health teams are performing "impossible" tasks under difficult conditions.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Sunday that it is unacceptable for the occupying entity to use the attack launched by Hamas on October 7 as a justification for collective punishment of the Palestinian people, and called for international monitoring on the ground in Gaza.

Lavrov also stressed that Hamas’s attack on the occupying entity "did not happen out of nowhere," adding: "We have said for many years that the single most dangerous factor in the Middle East is the unresolved status of the Palestinian state."
