The office of the President of Namibia, Hage Geingob, announced this Sunday morning that he died in the hospital at the age of 82, after weeks of suffering from cancer.

The presidential post on X did not mention the cause of death, but at the end of last month, the president's office announced that he would travel to the United States for treatment after being diagnosed with cancer.

The country's interim president Nangolo Mbumba, who was the vice president, said in his signed message: "With great sadness and regret, I inform you that Hage Geingob, President of the Republic of Namibia, died today at Lady Pohamba Hospital, where he was being treated."

Namibia is scheduled to hold presidential and parliamentary elections at the end of this year, with an interim president in place.

• Geingob and 10 years in power

- Geingob assumed the presidency of Namibia since 2014.

- He held the position of prime minister in 2013 and announced his recovery from prostate cancer, becoming president the following year.

- He suffered from health problems before coming to power.

- In 2013, he underwent brain surgery.

- He underwent surgery on the aortic artery in neighboring South Africa.

• Support for Gaza and clash with Germany

Geingob announced before his death his country's refusal to support Germany's stance on Israel in the International Court of Justice, where it faces charges of genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

The Namibian presidency expressed in a statement on X deep concern regarding the "shocking decision" issued by Germany two days ago, in which it rejected the moral indictment brought by South Africa before the International Court of Justice against Israel, accusing it of committing genocide against Palestinians.

Namibia referred to what it called the "first genocide" in the 20th century, committed by Germany on Namibian territory between 1904 and 1908, "which claimed the lives of tens of thousands of innocent Namibians under inhumane and brutal conditions."

Namibia stated that the German government has not yet fully atoned for the genocide committed on Namibian territory.

Namibia criticized Berlin's disregard for the violent Israeli strikes that claimed the lives of more than 23,000 Palestinians in Gaza, and ignored various United Nations reports highlighting the internal displacement of about 85% of civilians in Gaza amid severe shortages of food and basic services.
