Officials and defense lawyers said that a Pakistani court convicted former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife today, Saturday, and sentenced them to seven years in prison on charges that their 2018 marriage violates the law.
The ruling comes following another case in which Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi were sentenced on Wednesday to 14 years in prison on corruption charges. This comes ahead of the parliamentary elections scheduled for February 8, from which Khan has already been disqualified due to his conviction for illicit gain.
The couple's lawyer, Intisar Bangotha, said the verdict was announced by Judge Qudratullah after a day of trial conclusion. Khan and his family insist that the trial is politically motivated.
The prosecution said Khan and his wife violated the law which stipulates that a woman must wait three months before remarrying. Bibi had been married before.
This is Khan's fourth conviction since 2022, when he was ousted from power, and the sentences will be served concurrently.
