The spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary-General, Stéphane Dujarric, announced that 30% of Gaza schools were directly bombed, equivalent to 162 school buildings, while Israeli shelling completely destroyed 26 schools.
Dujarric said in a press conference that humanitarian relief workers in the area are examining satellite images to assess the impact of Israeli attacks on education.
He confirmed that "schools attended by about 175,000 students and employing more than 6,500 teachers were directly shelled," pointing out that "162 school buildings were directly bombed, representing about 30% of a total of 563 school buildings in Gaza, and 26 schools were completely destroyed."
He added that "no less than 55% of the schools in Gaza will require either complete reconstruction or major rehabilitation."
The Palestinian Ministry of Education had said that 286 government schools and 65 belonging to the Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) were bombed and damaged in the Gaza Strip, resulting in 83 of them sustaining severe damage, 7 being completely destroyed, and 49 schools in the West Bank subjected to storming and vandalism.
It added in a report published on the sixth of this month that "4,895 students were martyred and 8,514 injured since the start of the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip and the West Bank."
The Palestinian Ministry of Education confirmed that the Israeli targeting of schools affected 90% of government school buildings and education facilities, which suffered direct and indirect damage, in addition to 29% of school buildings being unusable due to complete demolition or severe damage, and that 133 government schools were used as shelters in the Gaza Strip.
