Monday marked four years since the Iranian Revolutionary Guard shot down flight PS752, killing 176 people, including Canadians.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said his government is looking for ways to list the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization.
Trudeau made this comment Monday at a ceremony to commemorate the victims of flight PS752, which was shot down by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard shortly after taking off from Tehran on January 8, 2020, killing everyone on board, totaling 176 people, including 55 Canadian citizens and 30 permanent residents.
Families of the victims have been demanding for years that the government list the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization.
The federal government has taken steps in response to the actions of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. It has used the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act to prevent high-ranking members of the Iranian regime from entering Canada. As a result, the Canada Border Services Agency has denied entry to dozens of senior Iranian officials and is investigating about 100 people with status in Canada for potential ties to Tehran.
But Trudeau indicated on Monday that his government is studying further options.
The Prime Minister said, "We know there is much we have to do to hold the regime accountable, and we will continue our work, including continuing to explore ways to responsibly list the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization."
Also on the fourth anniversary of the downing of flight PS752, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canada will look for ways to hold the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) accountable for the killing of 176 passengers, some of whom were Canadians.
The Liberal government has resisted for years the calls from opposition Conservatives and families of PS752 victims to label the entire Iranian Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization, arguing that such a listing would be a harsh approach that could affect low-ranking individuals who were forced to serve in the paramilitary force.
The CIA said that recruits make up more than 50% of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.
Trudeau's remarks come after Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc also refused last week to rule out designating the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist entity.
