Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will head to British Columbia today, Sunday, where he will spend a vacation with his family until August 1st.

A government official said that the Prime Minister’s Office does not disclose the specific location for security reasons.

Spokesperson Mohammed Hussein said in an email that Trudeau is traveling on a government plane as required, and he will reimburse the equivalent of a commercial flight ticket for himself and his family, and Trudeau will also pay for his family’s accommodation.

The Project Management Office has consulted with the Office of the Ethics Commissioner regarding the trip.

Trudeau and his family spent their vacation in British Columbia last summer and in Costa Rica in the summer of 2022.

It was found that Trudeau violated conflict of interest rules in 2016 when he took a vacation on the Aga Khan's private island in the Bahamas, and his office said he consults the Ethics Commissioner before personal travel plans to ensure compliance with guidelines.

The Conflict of Interest Act allows politicians to accept gifts and other benefits only from relatives or close family friends with whom they have well-established trusted ties.

Trudeau's family vacation in Jamaica last Christmas also sparked controversy after his office revised a statement that initially said he and his family would pay for their stay.

They later issued a clarification stating that the Prime Minister and his family stayed at no cost.

Trudeau said he stayed with friends during that holiday, just as most Canadians often do, and that his office followed all necessary rules.

The federal Ethics Commissioner, Conrad von Finckenstein, said at the time that he would not investigate the trip because his office was convinced that it was hosted by a close friend.

The Prime Minister must travel on a Canadian Armed Forces aircraft for security reasons, even if it is for personal travel.
