Toyota has issued a recall for the RAV4 model affecting hundreds of thousands of vehicles in Canada due to improper size and placement of 12-volt batteries, which may cause a fire while driving the car.

Toyota stated that the recall includes 249,416 vehicles in Canada from the 2013 to 2018 models.

Also, according to the notice, some replacement 12-volt batteries sized for the vehicles have top dimensions smaller than other batteries.

Toyota said in its recall notice that if the small-top battery is used for replacement and the mounting clip is not properly secured, the battery may move while driving the car through sharp turns.

Toyota also said in a press release that the movement may cause the positive battery terminal to contact the mounting clip and a short circuit, causing a fire risk.

Toyota added that it is working to find a solution, and when Toyota dealers are available, they will replace the battery mounting clip, battery tray, and positive terminal cover for owners at no cost.

It also stated that it would notify affected owners by the end of December 2023.

To check if a vehicle is affected, owners can search for a recall using the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
