Officials in the city of Toronto stated that residents will face a 9% increase in property taxes during the current year 2024, in addition to additional infrastructure fees amounting to 1.5% according to the preliminary budget presented last Wednesday. Residents will have to pay an average of an additional 30 dollars per month if the operating budget approval is applied, which is estimated at about 17 billion dollars, according to Shelley Carroll, Chair of the Budget Committee. It is expected that there will be recommendations to add smaller increases in property taxes in the coming years, according to Carroll. She also reported that there are efforts to balance budget needs
and the financial capabilities of the residents.
Among the most prominent points in the 2024 budget are a 9% increase in property tax and 1.5% for infrastructure as additional fees, and an increase in fees for water stations and waste treatment up to 3%, and an allocation of 82 million dollars for shelters and providing housing for the homeless, 30 million dollars specifically for public transportation, 20 million dollars allocated for community services, and 19 million dollars for public safety.
Carroll warned of a 6% increase in property tax if Ottawa does not provide more appropriate support by 2026.
